From a Photograph to Something You Can Keep
From a Photograph to Something You Can Keep
At Royal Memorials, we believe remembrance shouldn’t just be about preserving the past. It should be something you can touch, something kept close, rather than left in a place far away.
So we began trying a different approach—translating a flat photograph into a three-dimensional presence.
The Custom 3D Relief Portrait Keepsake Box, Memorial Frame, Memorial Plaque, and Walnut Display from our Memorial Keepsakes collection all begin at a very direct starting point: a single photograph. Some are clear, some are faded, and others are simply casual snapshots saved on a phone.
The Process: Giving Depth to an Image
The work begins with 3D modeling, reshaping a two-dimensional image into a dimensional structure. But this step is never automatic; every detail requires careful adjustment—the contours of a face, the direction of a gaze, the balance of proportions.
Throughout this stage, the creators, trained at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, continuously reference and refine the work against the original photograph.
Sometimes the most meaningful difference comes from something very small—the angle of a mouth, or the openness of the eyes—until it no longer just resembles the person, but feels like them.
Working with Bronze: Embracing Time
Only after the digital model is approved does it move into metal production on solid bronze plates, available in our standard 2-inch size or larger custom dimensions.
Bronze does not stay fixed in appearance. Over time, it shifts—deepening in tone, softening in texture, and responding differently to light.
Once the base form is created, the process becomes entirely manual: refining edges, adjusting surface texture, shaping contrast, and developing light and shadow through polishing, aging, and patina work.
There is no single formula for this stage.
Because of that, each finished piece carries subtle variation—some cleaner, some warmer, others retaining more visible marks of the process. These differences are kept, not corrected.
Designed to Stay Close
The finished bronze pieces are placed into four formats designed to sit quietly within everyday spaces:
Keepsake Box
A private space for letters, rings, or handwritten notes, kept beneath the portrait.
Memorial Frame
Designed for desks or mantelpieces, where it remains present without demand.
Memorial Plaque
A more permanent form for names, dates, or meaningful words alongside the relief.
Walnut Display
Bronze and natural walnut wood placed together, allowed to age and shift over time.
These objects are not meant to replace memory. They simply give it a physical place to remain close. That is the idea behind Memorial Keepsakes.
