Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers to common questions about cremation urns, sizing, memorial jewelry, engraving, shipping, returns, product care, and ordering. For topics that need more detail, we’ll point you to the relevant Royal Memorials guide.
1. Our Ritual & The Ceremony Care Kit™
Practical guidance on the Ceremony Care Kit™, careful handling, and the inspection each applicable urn receives before dispatch.
White Non-Slip Gloves are included with applicable urn orders to make handling more secure during placement or the transfer of cremated remains. They provide a steadier grip and also help reduce fingerprints and natural skin oils on polished, painted, metal, stone, cloisonne, and other finished surfaces.
For us, the gloves are both practical and respectful: they help protect the memorial while giving families a little more control during a moment that may feel unfamiliar.
- White Non-Slip Gloves: For a steadier grip and to help protect the urn’s finish during handling.
- Protective Masks: To support cleanliness and help reduce exposure to fine airborne particles during transfer.
- Secure Containment Bag: For holding cremated remains securely inside the urn where appropriate.
- Fastening Ties: For securely closing the containment bag after transfer.
Before dispatch, applicable urn orders go through our White Glove Inspection™. Depending on the product, we review the visible finish, structure, closure, joinery or fittings, and personalization where applicable before the urn is packed for shipment.
This inspection is separate from the capacity verification we perform when an urn is added to the Royal Memorials collection. Capacity verification confirms the usable internal volume of the design, while White Glove Inspection™ focuses on the condition of the individual product being prepared for your order.
2. Sizing, Capacity & Selection (The Practical Guide)
Practical answers about urn capacity, choosing the right size, and deciding how an urn will be used or placed.
A widely used planning guideline is approximately 1 cubic inch of urn capacity for each pound of body weight before cremation.
For example, if someone weighed about 180 lb before cremation, an urn with at least 180 cubic inches of capacity would generally be a reasonable starting point. The final volume of cremated remains can vary, so if the crematory provides an actual volume, use that measurement whenever possible.
Royal Memorials independently measures the usable internal capacity of every urn we offer rather than relying only on supplier specifications. For more detailed examples, see our Cremation Urn Size & Capacity Guide.
Many urns can be kept at home, placed in a columbarium, or used for burial, but the appropriate choice depends on the urn material, design, and the requirements of the cemetery or final placement location.
If an urn will be buried in a cemetery, ask whether an urn vault or another outer protective container is required. Cemetery rules vary, and some locations require additional protection regardless of the urn material.
For home display, also consider the urn’s dimensions, weight, stability, closure, and how it fits the space where it will be kept.
3. Shipping, Logistics & Timing
Quick answers about processing times, delivery, funeral home addresses, PO Boxes, military mail, and discreet packaging.
Most standard orders are prepared and dispatched within 1 business day. Personalized or custom orders may require additional processing time.
For the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, European Union member countries, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, standard international delivery generally takes approximately 5–10 business days from order placement, including processing and transit. Actual transit time can vary because of customs clearance, carrier routing, holidays, weather, and remote-area service.
If your order is needed for a funeral or memorial service, we recommend allowing additional time. See our Shipping & Delivery page for full details.
Yes. Memorial products are shipped in plain outer packaging without prominent Royal Memorials branding. This helps protect privacy and avoids drawing unnecessary attention to the contents of the shipment.
Internal protective packaging is selected according to the product’s size, weight, material, and shape so the memorial is properly prepared for transit.
Yes, we can ship to a funeral home when the address and receiving arrangements are suitable. Before using a funeral home as the delivery address, confirm that they can accept the package, that the receiving name is correct, and that someone will be available during the expected delivery window.
You may also choose delivery to your home if you prefer to receive and review the order personally before taking it to the funeral home. Either option can work; the best choice depends on your timing and the funeral home’s receiving procedures.
PO Box delivery may be available for selected memorial jewelry and small keepsake orders where supported by the carrier. Full-size urns generally require a physical street address.
APO/FPO military delivery may also be available. Because these shipments move through military mail systems, delivery can take approximately 2–4 weeks after dispatch depending on routing and local handling.
If you are unsure whether your address can be served, contact us before ordering so we can review the available shipping method.
4. Personalization & Engraving
Quick guidance on which memorial products can be personalized, how engraving varies by material, and what to know before placing a custom order.
Many Royal Memorials urns can be personalized, but the available method depends on the material, surface, and individual design. Some wood and metal urns can be engraved directly, while decorative, stone, ceramic, cloisonne, or textured surfaces may be better suited to an engraved plate, tag, or another personalization method.
Where engraving is available, the individual product page will show the applicable options and any limits on text, placement, or design. For a fuller explanation of materials, inscription ideas, and personalization methods, see our Memorial Engraving & Personalization guide.
Personalized and engraved products are final sale once personalization or production has begun, so they cannot be cancelled, returned, or exchanged for a change of mind. Please review all names, dates, spelling, punctuation, and other personalization details carefully before placing the order.
If the finished personalization does not match the information you submitted, or there is a confirmed manufacturing defect, contact us so we can review the issue and arrange the appropriate resolution. See our Returns & Exchanges page for the full policy.
5. Materials, Care & Usage
Practical guidance on urn closures, secure handling, travel, and how different materials affect everyday use.
Most Royal Memorials urns are designed to close securely without requiring permanent adhesive, but the closure method depends on the material and individual design.
- Wood Urns: Many designs use a bottom-loading panel secured with screws.
- Metal, Marble & Cloisonne Urns: Many designs use a threaded lid or another mechanical closure.
- Ceramic, Glass & Other Designs: Closure methods vary by product and may include fitted lids or other construction-specific systems.
Where appropriate, cremated remains may also be placed inside a secure containment bag before being placed in the urn. Always follow the filling and closure instructions for the individual product rather than assuming that glue is required.
6. Returns & "Peace of Mind" Guarantee
A quick overview of return eligibility, personalized-item restrictions, and what to do if an order is damaged or incorrect.
Royal Memorials offers a 60-Day Peace of Mind Guarantee for eligible unused and non-personalized products. If you change your mind and the item meets the return conditions, you may request a return within 60 days.
- Eligibility: The item must be unused, non-personalized, in its original condition, and returned with the original packaging.
- Return Shipping: For an ordinary change-of-mind return, the customer is responsible for the cost of shipping the item back to the designated return location.
- Restocking Fee: We do not charge a restocking fee on approved eligible returns.
- Personalized Items: Personalized and engraved products are final sale once personalization or production has begun, except where a confirmed manufacturing defect or Royal Memorials personalization error applies.
- Items That Have Held Cremated Remains: For hygiene, safety, and respectful handling reasons, these items cannot be physically returned or exchanged.
If an order arrives damaged, incorrect, defective, or affected by a confirmed personalization error, contact us so we can review the issue and determine the appropriate resolution. For full details, see our Returns & Exchanges page.
