Choosing an Urn or Keepsake on Black Friday: Beyond the Discount
Black Friday is still more than two months away, but preparations for the American holiday shopping season have already begun across China.
Factories are planning production, exporters are preparing inventory, and logistics companies are working backward from November delivery dates. For businesses serving American customers, Black Friday does not begin on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Much of the work starts weeks or months earlier.
This year, those preparations coincide with a notable moment in China–U.S. relations. On September 24, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a state visit to the United States and was welcomed at the White House by President Donald Trump. In his remarks at the state dinner, President Xi recalled that the two countries began trading more than two centuries ago, exchanging goods that met different needs and drew on their respective strengths. He also noted that President George Washington had personally acquired a large collection of Chinese porcelain. At the White House arrival ceremony, President Trump likewise referred to the way the two countries had crossed the ocean centuries ago to trade and learn from one another.
For Royal Memorials, that history is not entirely abstract. Some of the products we make and source for American families continue long traditions of Chinese porcelain, cloisonné enamel, metalwork and woodwork. We are a small participant in a much larger exchange, but the reason someone comes to us is very different from an ordinary holiday purchase.
Every November, retailers give us reasons to decide quickly. A lower price appears for a few days, sometimes for only a few hours. That can be useful when you already know what you need. It is a harder way to choose something connected to the death of a person you love.
There is an old Chinese saying associated with medicine shops: “May everyone stay well, even if medicine gathers dust on the shelves.” The wish behind it is simple. People’s health matters more than selling medicine. At Royal Memorials, we feel something similar: we would rather you and your family had many more years together than ever need to buy a memorial from us.
When a loss does happen, cost matters. Families have budgets, and comparing prices is sensible. A less expensive urn is not a lesser expression of love. If a Black Friday offer makes a suitable cremation urn or memorial keepsake more affordable, there is no reason to feel uncomfortable using it.
But the choice begins with the person being remembered. If they said where they wanted their ashes kept or scattered, those wishes deserve careful consideration. If they left no instructions, family members may need to decide together: keep the ashes in one place, share a small portion among family members, scatter them, or choose not to keep a permanent urn. A sale should not settle that conversation for them.
Once the family knows what it needs, the practical details become clearer. An urn must have enough capacity for the ashes and fit the place where it will be kept. Its opening and closure should suit how it will be filled and handled. If it will be engraved, the name and dates must be right. If it is needed for a funeral or memorial service, the processing and delivery schedule matters more than a countdown on a screen.
Check those details. Ask questions if something is unclear. Choose a simpler or lower-priced option if it meets your needs. And if you are not ready to choose, you do not need a shopping event to decide for you.
Our Responsibility Does Not Change With the Season
Whether someone finds Royal Memorials during Black Friday, through a funeral professional, through a search for a particular urn, or at another point in the year, our responsibility is the same: to provide accurate product information, careful inspection and a product that arrives as it was described.
We hope to continue doing that better for the American families we serve.
A discount may last a weekend. The choice your family lives with will last much longer.
